The floods have damaged 32,837 houses and 16,488 hectares of farmland.

NEMA’s Head of the Press Unit, Manzo Ezekiel, stated that this data was gathered from the agency’s Emergency Operations Centre, which was established for flood monitoring and coordinating resource deployment. NEMA has begun deploying relief items to support the state governments’ efforts in assisting those affected by the floods.

Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, has warned at-risk communities and those living near waterways to relocate to higher ground ahead of the peak rainy season. She urged stakeholders to remain vigilant and activate flood preparation plans.

In response to the flooding, NEMA has conducted impact assessments with various State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) to provide timely and appropriate support. The agency’s early preparations have involved deploying search and rescue teams and alerting all NEMA zonal and operation offices.

Additionally, NEMA is continuing public sensitization and grassroots awareness campaigns on solid waste management to ensure blocked drainages and waterways are cleared. The agency is committed to coordinating and providing necessary support for efficient disaster management.

Umar also advised farmers not to panic over the temporary dry season in some states, reassuring that it will soon pass as predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).
