The family of Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, the revered designer of Nigeria’s national flag, has announced the burial rites for the late patriarch, who died on August 29, 2023, aged 87.

In a statement released on Monday by his son Akinwumi Akinkunmi, the burial is scheduled to take place from Wednesday, September 4 and Friday, September 6, 2024.

The family further assured that a detailed burial arrangement would soon be communicated.

“We thank the Federal Government for sending the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Hon Idris Mohammed, to pay condolence to the family when the incident happened,” the family said.

While stating that they were still hopeful of hearing from the Federal Government as regards its promises in respect of the burial, the family made a special request that the Nigerian flag be flown at half-mast during the burial period to honour Pa Akinkunmi’s legacy.

The family also extended appreciation to the Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for keeping his word to support the family in giving Akinkunmi a befitting burial.

They thanked the roles played by members of the seventh Oyo State House of Assembly, the chairman, Oyo State advisory council, Bolaji Ayorinde; and members of the council for standing by the family.

“We will also never forget to appreciate the print and broadcast media outlets for lending their support to the family’s voice until it got the desired attention of the concerned authorities,” the statement concluded.

Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, fondly remembered as “Mr. Flag Man,” designed the iconic green-white-green flag in 1958, which became a symbol of Nigeria’s sovereignty.
