Senator representing Jigawa North-East Senatorial District and Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Ahmed Abdulhamid Malam-Madori has called on the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun and personnel of the Nigerian Police to sustain civility and professionalism in view of violent protests experienced in the ongoing nationwide protests.

The Senator also commended IGP and the Police operatives for the professional handling of the on-going #EndBadGovernance protests across the country.

LEADERSHIP reports that some Nigerians on August 1, commenced a 10-day protests to ventilate their grievances over the rising living costs due to the removal of fuel subsidy, among other policies blamed on the President Bola Tinubu-led administration.

Senator Malam-Madori, in a statement on Monday in Abuja, praised the police boss and his men for their restraint, civility and professionalism in responding to the protests, which he said were consistent with the best practices of modern policing.

“I want to commend the Inspector General of Police and his officers for the professional manner in handling the #EndBadGovernance protests which have been taking place across the country.

“Their commitment to professionalism even in the face of threats associated with the protests is commendable and a reflection of their unwavering commitment to the safety of Nigerians and the protection of their fundamental rights,” the lawmaker said.

Senator Malam-Madori emphasised the need for the police to continue to adhere to the ethics of civil engagement as the protests continue.

He further called on all officers and men to ensure that they do everything within their powers to maintain law and order, even as they respect the rights of protesters.

He said, “As the protests continue, it is important that the police remain professional in their conduct. It is crucial that the police continue to adhere to the highest standards of professionalism, while also respecting the rights of citizens to peacefully express their grievances.”

He assures that the Senate Committee was fully committed to supporting the police in the efforts to maintain law and order as well as in protecting the lives and property of Nigerians.

He also pleaded with the citizens to continue to exercise restraint and engage in peaceful protests while also urging them to work with the police to ensure that the ongoing protests do not degenerate into violence and chaos.
