Muslim residents of the Adamawa State capital, Yola, trooped out on Saturday to an Eid praying ground in the city, where they offered special prayers for rain.

The worshippers gathered at the expansive grounds of the NEPA Central Mosque in Jimeta seeking Allah’s intervention with rain.

It has been at least 25 days in Yola without rain, and crops have begun to wither, just as the people complain of heat in a month, August, when much rain and coolness of weather should be the norm.

The Chief Imam of Demsawo, Mallam Salihu Suleiman, who led the prayers, urged the people to repent of their sins so that God would show mercy and pour down the rains.

He also cautioned Muslims against failure to give alms (Zakah) to the needy.

The Acting District Head of Jimeta, Mohammadu Chubado, appreciated the residents for coming out to attend the prayer.

Chubado asked for continuity of the prayers on daily basis until it rains.

In random comments among the Muslims who participated in the prayers, one Aliyu Balla, a farmer who said he had 20 hectares of rice, said he was afraid that shortage of rain might result in very poor yield.
