Victor Boniface opened his goals account for the new season as Bayer Leverkusen defeated Stuttgart on penalties to win a first-ever German Super Cup title on Saturday night.
Despite playing most part of the game with 10 players, Leverkusen snatched a late equaliser to tie the game at 2-2 and force the game to penalty shootout which they won 4-3.
Also in action was Nathan Tella who made the starting 11 alongside Boniface.
It is the third title for both Boniface and Tella, who helped Leverkusen secure the Bundesliga and German Cup last season.
Leverkusen went unbeaten in the Bundesliga, becoming the first team to achieve the feat in the history of the German topflight.
Boniface gave Leverkusen the lead in the 11th minute but just four minutes after the opener Enzo Millot equalised for Stuttgart.
In the 37th minute Leverkusen had a player sent off after Martin Terrier was shown a straight red card.
Stuttgart made the numerical advantage count and went 2-1 up on 63 minutes thanks to Deniz Undav.
But just two minutes left Leverkusen equalised as Patrik Schick got on the score sheet and dragged the game to penalty shootout.
In the shootout, Stuttgart missed two of their five kicks while Leverkusen converted all their four attempts to emerge champions of the German Super Cup for the first time.
