Manchester City claimed the 2024 Community Shield by winning on penalties following a 1-1 draw with Manchester United in regular time. United’s Jadon Sancho, making his first appearance since his departure earlier this year due to conflicts with manager Erik ten Hag, missed a critical penalty.

Jonny Evans also missed, paving the way for City defender Manuel Akanji to secure the victory with his decisive penalty.

In the 90 minutes of regular play, Alejandro Garnacho came off the bench to score for United, giving them the lead.

However, Bernardo Silva, also a substitute, equalized late in the match, pushing the game to a penalty shootout.

Garnacho’s goal made him the youngest player to score in the Community Shield since Cesc Fabregas in 2005 for Arsenal against Chelsea, and the youngest for United since George Best in 1965.
