Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea have signed an agreement for the Gulf of Guinea Pipeline Project, advancing Nigeria’s gas expansion and energy transition initiatives.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on a three-day official visit to Malabo, Equatorial Guinea’s capital, signed on behalf of Nigeria, while President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo signed for Equatorial Guinea.

 

Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, stated that the agreement includes legislative and regulatory measures for the gas pipeline, its establishment and operation, natural gas transit, pipeline ownership, and general principles.

 

President Tinubu highlighted that this agreement would create new opportunities for gas exploration and employment. The leaders also discussed employment creation, food security, multilateral relations, and conflict resolution on the continent during a private meeting.

 

Tinubu emphasized the importance of promoting peace and stability in Africa, learning from Europe and America’s conflict resolution strategies, and addressing internal challenges such as inadequate capital and industrialization efforts.

 

The discussion also covered security challenges, the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA), and food security. Tinubu stressed the need for African solutions to African problems.

 

President Mbasogo praised the long-standing bilateral relations between Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea, emphasizing deepened cooperation and Africa’s vision for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

 

The agreement was also signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and Equatorial Guinea’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Simeon Oyono Esono. Other Nigerian officials present included the Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Chief Lateef Fagbemi, SAN; Minister of Defence, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar; Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; Minister of State, Petroleum, Gas, Ekperikpe Ekpo; and Minister of Youth Development, Dr. Jamila Ibrahim-Biu.
