The Labour Party’s presidential candidate during the 2023 elections, has labeled the seizure of three presidential jets by a French court as a significant international embarrassment for Nigeria.

In a statement posted on his X account, Obi expressed concern over the lack of transparency surrounding the acquisition and sale of these jets, which are owned by the Nigerian people.

He remarked, “The recent news about the seizure of three jets from Nigeria’s presidential fleet further highlights the failures of our leadership and our disregard for the rule of law, even within a democratic framework.”

Obi, who emphasised on how this incident reflects deeper issues within the leadership and the growing economic struggles faced by many Nigerians, criticised the federal government for proceeding with the purchase of a presidential jet despite widespread discontent.

“The decision to buy a jet when our citizens are experiencing severe economic hardship showcases the insensitivity of this administration,” Obi said.

He also pointed out the incident’s ramifications, as the jets are now detained due to breaches linked to poor leadership.

“My long-standing call for accountability at all levels of government remains crucial. Transparency in governance is essential,” he added.

Obi highlighted that the Nigerian public was kept in the dark about both the purchase and the subsequent sale of the jets until a French court intervened.

“Federal assets, belonging to the people, are being treated as personal property,” he noted.
Obi criticised the expenditure of $100 million on a presidential jet in a nation struggling with extreme poverty, rising food prices, and a significant number of out-of-school children.

He further questioned the governance practices surrounding this issue, asking, “How well did the Ogun State government adhere to its agreements with the Chinese firm? What actions were taken by both Ogun State and the federal government following the UK court ruling regarding Nigerian buildings in Liverpool before this incident in France?”

Obi urged the federal government to be transparent about the circumstances leading to this international debacle, demanding clarity for the Nigerian people.
