Lagos State governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday urged the Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) to be transparent and accountable, as well as render quality service for the benefit of the people.

Governor Sanwo-Olu gave the charge when he received the managing director of the NSITF, Oluwaseun Faleye and Senate Committee on a courtesy visit at Lagos House, Ikeja.

He affirmed that the state government has a robust insurance package in place for Lagos State workforce, assuring of his administration’s willingness to harness the areas of collaboration with the NSITF to achieve its objectives, as well as explore the benefits of the Fund for workers and Lagos residents.

He noted that the retreat organised by NSITF for the legislative arm would be for the benefit of Nigerians, restating his administration’s commitment to encourage the Fund to ensure that people get the dividends of democracy for a better, sustainable and reliant nation for future generations.

The senator representing Plateau Central and chairman, Senate Committee on Employment, Labour and Productivity, Dicket Plang, said National Assembly was committed to ensuring that the NSITF perform its functions to ensure employees and employers in both public and private sectors are protected and compensated when at work, probably some hazards take place.

Senator Plang said the NSITF is a product of the Parliament and laws are dynamic, adding, “From time to time, we need to sit and get back to find out how successful, the MDAs are performing and when there’s a need to make some changes, we do so to increase productivity.

“We are here also to understand what the management goes through in our retreat so that in our own oversight function, we should be able to come up in such a way that they would succeed.”

Plang added that they, “Have the responsibility to ensure that both constitutional functions of the employers and employees are adhered to for the benefits of Nigerians.”

He said that for the committee to be hosted by Governor Sanwo-Olu “signifies that there is a synergy between the Legislative arm of government and the Executive arm of government.”

The managing director, NSITF, Oluwaseun Faleye, said that they were in Lagos State for a robust two-day retreat, themed: ” Building a Stronger NSITF,” designed to deepen stakeholders’ engagement and to use the legislators’ initiative to support them.
